Bigger and more expensive isn't always better. There are times when well executed simplicity trumps all else. Ivan thinks that this is the case with the Mount to Coast S1 and R1.
Mount to Coast S1 Introduction:
Heavier, Narrower, Better?
Ivan: The Mount to Coast S1 is designed as a training companion to the race-focused R1 model previously reviewed here. Both shoes are developed for long/ultra-distance road running and share many similarities. However, there are a few significant differences between the two. The S1 features a thicker and less adaptable upper, which adds some weight. It also has a narrower platform with a 1mm higher stack and is $10 cheaper.
You might wonder why you wouldn’t just opt for the R1. The fit of the S1 is quite different, and the narrow platform changes the ride experience. Let’s delve into the details and see how the Mount to Coast S1 stacks up.
Specs:
Stack height: 36.5mm heel to 26.5mm toe
Drop: 10mm
Weight: 258g | 9.1oz
MSRP: $150
Mount to Coast S1 Upper:
A Perfect Wrap
Ivan: I can’t help but compare the Mount to Coast S1 to the R1, which we recently reviewed, as they were received simultaneously and share several similarities. However, the S1 differs significantly in its upper, likely contributing to the additional 20-25g of weight. It features a soft Jacquard mesh upper made from 100% recycled yarn and is well-padded throughout. The heel cup is sturdy and includes a TPU cage for added stability. While you can’t adjust the fit like in the R1, I find the S1’s fit superior straight out of the box. It wraps my foot perfectly, providing a comfortable and secure fit in both the heel and midfoot sections, with a bit more space up front.
The combination of the sturdy heel cup, a fully gusseted plush tongue, and the soft, breathable material ensures my feet don’t feel cramped at any point. However, those who experience significant swelling during long runs might benefit more from the adjustable lacing system of the R1. Up front, a semi-firm toe bumper adds structure and protects the toes, making the S1 suitable for light off-road use as well.
Midsole:
High Mileage Hero
Ivan: The Mount to Coast S1 features the same LightCell midsole found in the R1, with an additional 1 mm of this PEBAX hybrid compound. This difference hasn’t been particularly noticeable during my runs. However, the narrower platform has stood out, aligning well with my midfoot strike and high cadence. The ride is more enjoyable as it doesn’t alter my natural foot strike, while still maintaining stability thanks to the sturdy heel section. Cushioning feels identical to the R1, with the resilient ‘ZeroSag’ insert and GOFLOW geometry providing excellent shock absorption and guidance.
Although I don’t participate in ultra-distance races, I maintain a high weekly mileage, averaging about 130 km at the moment. During my current training build-up, the Mount to Coast S1 has become my go-to shoe. The simple yet well-fitting upper and the balanced ride make it a favourite. Despite usually preferring more rockered geometries, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoy running in the S1. The fit and feel are simple and pleasant, offering just enough comfort and cushioning without being overly soft and mushy. It’s efficient and provides a dampening feeling rather than a bouncy one, which suits me well for my longest runs where pace is not the main focus.
Mount to Coast S1 Outsole:
Smooth Transitions
Ivan: I have tested the outsole in various weather conditions lately, as summer in Scandinavia has now shifted to more autumn-like weather. I have had no issues with grip, and the durability has been excellent. The black GOFLOW guidance component seems particularly resilient to wear and tear. Additionally, I’ve noticed how effectively this guidance system promotes a smoother transition from midfoot to forefoot. I hope more companies explore similar features, as innovations that enhance the ride are always welcome.
Mount to Coast S1 Conclusion:
Delivers On All Promises
Ivan: Since this has been my go-to shoe during a period of high-mileage training, I can confidently say that it delivers on its promises. This neutral long-distance trainer for road running offers a simple yet secure and comfortable fit, along with stability elements to support extended periods of running. The ride feels dampened with a bit of guidance, promoting a smooth transition without relying on a rocker or particularly energetic midsole compound. It’s not a dull ride by any means; instead, it’s a balanced one that prioritises comfort and efficiency over long durations. I highly recommend the Mount to Coast S1 for those seeking a daily companion for easy runs, regardless of the distance.
