SPECS

From the very first moment I slipped into the norda 055, I experienced something completely new. It was a sensation I had never found in any trail shoe before. It felt as if the shoe instantly eliminated what is often the greatest challenge in ultra running: discomfort. Instead of constantly thinking about my feet, I felt protected, supported, and free to focus entirely on the trail ahead.

That first impression was later confirmed during a real-world test at UTMB, where I ran from Chamonix to Courmayeur. This involved covering roughly 70 kilometers with 4,000 meters of elevation gain in just under 10 hours. Also, carrying all my gear in complete self-sufficiency. Throughout the effort, I was genuinely amazed by what these shoes were capable of delivering. Even as fatigue accumulated and the terrain became increasingly demanding, the level of comfort and protection remained exceptional.

The norda 055 is genuinely mind-blowing in several areas that we’ll explore later, but my initial conclusion is already quite clear. norda has come remarkably close to creating the ultimate ultra trail shoe. What’s even more impressive is that this doesn’t feel like a niche product designed for a specific type of runner. Instead, it seems capable of working for virtually everyone. From experienced ultrarunners to everyday trail enthusiasts, which is a remarkable achievement for the brand.

Upper and Fit of the norda 055

What works for me

The fit is simply outstanding. I have fairly wide feet, yet the shoe felt perfect from the first run. More importantly, it strikes a rare balance between being precise and secure without ever feeling tight, making it suitable for a wide variety of foot shapes.

The comfort around the instep and ankle is equally impressive. norda uses generous foam padding that wraps smoothly around the ankle collar, and the seamless construction eliminates any pressure points or friction. The result is exceptional long-distance comfort.

I’m also becoming a huge fan of norda’s Dyneema material upper. It is at least as breathable as Matryx which was the reference on the market at the moment, while offering better protection against water and external elements, making it feel both premium and highly capable for ultra-distance racing.

Finally, the lacing system is excellent. The laces are comfortable and extend high enough toward the ankle collar to create a very secure lockdown, keeping the foot stable and confident, especially on technical descents.

What doesn’t work for me

One small point worth mentioning is that the shoe can be a little tricky to put on. The opening feels fairly snug, which reminded me of shoes like the Salomon S/LAB Pulsar. It sometimes takes a bit more effort to slide the foot in than with more traditional trail shoes.

That said, this is something you only notice before running and not during the run itself. In fact, it’s likely a consequence of the excellent lockdown and secure fit. I could see it being slightly less convenient during a long race if you’re taking your shoes off at an aid station, but overall it’s a very minor trade-off considering the comfort and security the upper provides once you’re moving.

Midsole and Ride of the norda 055

What works for me

Moving on to the midsole and ride, this is where the norda 055 truly impressed me during my run from Chamonix to Courmayeur.

When you first look at the shoe, the massive stack height immediately catches your attention. 31 mm in the heel and 25 mm in the forefoot, make it one of the highest-stacked trail shoes on the market. Traditionally, I’m a bit cautious with this kind of design on technical trails because high-stack shoes can sometimes feel unstable and require very strong ankles to avoid rolling on uneven terrain. Surprisingly, the norda 055 completely changed that perception. Despite the generous amount of foam underfoot, the shoe feels remarkably stable and confidence-inspiring.

And of course, with that much stack comes exceptional cushioning. What makes the experience special, however, is that norda’s Arnitel TPEE foam manages to deliver plenty of protection without sacrificing responsiveness. The shoe never feels dull or overly soft. Instead, it provides a lively and energetic ride that makes every stride enjoyable.

The overall running experience was simply outstanding. It reminded me of François D’Haene’s famous description of the S/LAB Ultra as a shoe that shields you from the constant aggression of rocks and rough terrain. The norda 055 gave me that exact feeling. At times, the protection was so effective that I almost felt like I was running on the road rather than on mountain trails.

I rarely come away from a run with such positive sensations. Whether cruising at an easy pace or pushing a little harder, the shoe remained a pleasure to run in. Most impressively, it was one of the few trail shoes that genuinely felt like it delayed fatigue. Even late into the run, when my legs were starting to tire, I could still pick up the pace whenever I wanted without feeling punished by the terrain. That ability to preserve comfort, protection, and efficiency over long distances is, in my opinion, what makes a truly great ultra shoe.

What doesn’t work for me

If I had to be really picky, and that’s difficult because I genuinely believe this is the best trail-running midsole currently available, the only drawback would be its weight.

That said, I see it more as a consequence of the design choices than a true flaw. If you want this level of cushioning and protection, the shoe needs a substantial amount of Arnitel TPEE foam underfoot. The added weight is simply part of the package.

What makes the norda 055 so impressive is that it remains incredibly versatile despite this. Whether you’re a lighter runner looking for comfort over long distances or a heavier runner seeking maximum protection, the platform works exceptionally well across the board.

Personally, I think this slight weight penalty is more than compensated for by the cushioning, stability, and energy return the shoe delivers. Throughout my run, the benefits were far more noticeable than the extra grams, making it a trade-off I would gladly accept every time. Finally, one thing that bothered me on the descents was the insole, which occasionally shifted inside the shoe. It was only a minor issue, but noticeable enough to be distracting at times.

Outsole of the norda 055

Grip and Traction

The Vibram Megagrip Elite is outstanding in every respect. I had already tested this outsole on the norda 001 and absolutely loved it. This time, I only used it in dry conditions, but it performed flawlessly across all types of terrain, including roads, trails, roots, and rocks. Traction on climbs was excellent, while downhill grip inspired confidence at all times. After 100 km in the norda 055, there are no visible signs of wear. Having logged nearly 500 km in the norda 001 with the same outsole, I have also noticed very little wear. At this point, I am fully convinced of the durability of this outsole.

Durability

I believe the norda 055 represents the very best that can currently be achieved across every component of a trail shoe. The upper and laces are made from Dyneema®, making them incredibly resistant and likely close to indestructible under normal use. The Arnitel® TPEE midsole also stands out for its longevity, showing virtually no signs of compression or deformation over time. I genuinely believe it will take several hundred kilometers before runners notice any meaningful change in the ride or performance of the shoe. Finally, the Vibram Megagrip Elite outsole should easily last for hundreds of kilometers as well. Having already tested the same outsole on previous norda models, I have seen firsthand how remarkably durable it is. Taken as a whole, the norda 055 is one of the most durable trail shoes I have ever tested.

Conclusion

Value for Money

When it comes to value for money, I find myself surprisingly saying that the €310 price tag, while undeniably extravagant, is justified. With the environmental awareness that I believe we should all have as trail runners, investing in a highly durable shoe that can handle virtually everything makes a lot of sense. I genuinely believe the norda 055 could last through one, if not two full trail running seasons, making it easier to justify the initial investment over time. For me, this is a true do-it-all shoe. Whether you’re tackling technical trails, runnable terrain, short races, ultras, or everyday training runs, the norda 055 can do it all. As a result, it could easily replace an entire shoe rotation, which further strengthens its overall value proposition.

Fitting it into a shoe rotation

As mentioned earlier, this shoe would replace 99% of the shoes currently on the market for almost any type of runner. The norda 055 can be used across virtually all distances, on any terrain, and for nearly every kind of training session. From daily runs and long endurance outings to technical mountain adventures and ultra-distance races, it consistently delivers.

The only use case where I might not consider it the ideal choice is short-distance racing, particularly events under 40 km. Even then, I believe the vast majority of runners could comfortably and successfully race in the norda 055. However, athletes specifically chasing maximum speed over shorter distances may prefer a lighter, more aggressive shoe. Outside of that niche scenario, the norda 055 is as close to a one-shoe quiver as I have ever tested.

Final Verdict

The Norda 055 is, in many ways, a truly unique and even slightly disorienting shoe. It delivers a running sensation unlike anything else on the market, combining exceptional comfort, stability and efficiency in a way that is hard to describe until you experience it yourself.

Norda has created an incredibly versatile trail shoe that will suit almost any ultra runner, regardless of body type, running style or terrain preference. The fit is excellent, the upper is supremely comfortable, and the premium materials are clearly built to last. In my view, that durability aligns perfectly with the values trail runners should be embracing today.

At €305, the price is undeniably a barrier. However, its versatility and expected longevity help justify the investment. For 99% of runners, the 055 can handle both training and racing duties across virtually all distances and terrains. Only elite athletes chasing maximum performance in shorter races may prefer something lighter and more aggressive.

What impressed me most was the remarkable running economy it provides. Few shoes have left me feeling as fresh over long distances, making the 055 an outstanding choice for ultras and all-day adventures.

My only real criticism is the narrow ankle collar, which can make slipping the shoe on a bit challenging. Beyond that, it’s a genuine pleasure to run in across every type of terrain.

Comparisons Against Similar Shoes

norda 055 vs. HOKA  Tecton X 3

Trail Shoe of the Year 2024

The norda 055 and Hoka Tecton X 3 are both outstanding trail shoes, but with different strengths. The norda feels slightly firmer underfoot, while remaining very comfortable and protective. The Tecton X 3 delivers a ride that feels closer to a road supershoe adapted for trail running, with a very energetic and fluid sensation. While the Tecton X 3 already offered an excellent upper and gaiter, the norda 055 improves further on comfort, fit, and foot lockdown.

Both shoes are a pleasure to run in, but runners looking for maximum lightness will likely prefer the Tecton X 3. The norda 055 is the more versatile option, suitable for a wider range of runners, foot strikes, and body types, whereas the Tecton X 3 tends to favor lighter runners with a midfoot strike. Finally, durability is clearly a strong advantage of the norda 055, whose materials and construction inspire exceptional long-term confidence.
