The Nike Apex sits at the top of Nike’s race-day lineup. Nike created it for marathon runners chasing every possible second. The shoe combines double-stacked Air Zoom units, ZoomX LT foam, a carbon Flyplate and a Flyknit X upper. It also introduces a 40mm zero-drop platform, with the same stack height from heel to forefoot. Nike claims up to 40% more energy return than the Alphafly 3 in a men’s size 10.
The shoe has already appeared at the highest level of marathon racing. Jacob Kiplimo raced in an Apex prototype at the 2026 London Marathon, where he finished third in 2:00:28. He came just 28 seconds from the two-hour mark while running the fastest marathon of his career.

The Apex uses a redesigned carbon fiber Flyplate with a raised inverse-wave shape. This geometry directs loading towards the double-stacked Air Zoom units. The plate also supports forward movement and stability. Nike adds rocker geometry to complete the system. The rocker encourages forward movement and aims to help runners maintain their rhythm as fatigue increases.
The shoe also introduces an unusual zero-drop geometry. Both the heel and forefoot reach the 40mm racing limit. This creates consistent cushioning across the entire platform. Nike wants this geometry to combine cushioning, impact protection and responsiveness. The brand specifically designed the system around the demands of marathon racing.
