As the days grow shorter and temperatures drop, many runners drift indoors and start to forget the joy that winter running can bring. Whether you’re jogging socially before a coffee stop, tackling snowy mountain trails, or grinding through tough interval sessions on the track, having the right gear can make all the difference. That’s why we’ve put together our top outfit choices for this winter. This will help you getting out the door, staying comfortable and running through any weather.

Best Winter Running Outfit – Shoes

Nike Vomero Plus

The Nike Vomero Plus is one of the newest additions to Nike’s max-cushion lineup. Built with a full ZoomX midsole, it echoes the much-loved Invincible series. However, introduces more stability and everyday versatility akin to the traditional Vomero platform.

At first glance, it may look like a shoe suited only for easy recovery runs. But, the responsiveness of ZoomX and the surprisingly lightweight feel make it a reliable winter workhorse. For runners training toward spring marathons, the Vomero Plus provides the cushioning needed for long tempo efforts while remaining stable enough for consistent daily mileage.

Best Winter Running Outfit – Shorts

Adidas Adizero Control x Rheon Shorts

As temperatures cool but tights still feel excessive, half tights offer the perfect middle ground. They offer added warmth without restriction. In addition, the adidas Adizero Control x Rheon Shorts go a step further by integrating targeted Rheon technology. This supports your muscles and helps direct energy more efficiently.

While I haven’t tested the science behind these shorts in a lab, they remain one of my favourite pieces of kit. I reach for them on demanding sessions, long runs when my legs feel heavy. Even just on grey winter days when premium-feeling gear adds that extra motivation to get outside. They have the perfect balance of tight-fitting support along with a stretchy and forgiving material.

Best Winter Running Outfit – Shirt

On Performance-T Lumos

Visibility becomes essential as daylight fades, and the On Performance-T Lumos excels here. Its reflective design ensures you stand out even on the darkest winter runs. The top is exceptionally lightweight, barely noticeable once on, and I’ve had no issues with chafing. While it doesn’t provide much insulation, it’s ideal for harder sessions in mild winter conditions when a jacket or long sleeve would be too warm – particularly during those hard sessions.

Best Winter Running Outfit – Jackets

Nike Aeroloft Jacket

If you like to stay warm in winter, the Nike Aeroloft Jacket is a standout option. As temperatures approach 0°C/32°F, I find myself reaching for it more often, and it has consistently kept me warm. That said, it is sometimes even too warm. Despite its down construction, it feels surprisingly light while running. Two side pockets add practicality, offering space for keys or a phone and a warm place to rest your hands during stops.

The main drawback is durability: the bound recesses that hold the down in place can separate over time. This has happened to several on my jacket after 2 winters of use. It doesn’t currently affect performance, but it’s worth noting for a premium purchase. Washing the jacket also requires care, including specific detergents and drying methods.

ASICS Fujitrail Elite Jacket

Winter brings wind and rain to just about every climate. For me, the ASICS Fujitrail Elite has become my go-to rain jacket. It has carried me through monsoon-like conditions. While not keeping me completely dry, it significantly improves comfort compared to running without a jacket.

What sets it apart is its balance of lightness and structure. Many lightweight jackets compromise on comfort or practicality to save weight, but the Fujitrail Elite avoids that trap. Thanks to its Pertex material, it offers reliable protection in an impressively low-bulk package. A final bonus is its packability: the entire jacket can be stowed into a small pocket in the hood, making it easy to carry during variable weather.

Best Winter Running Outfit – Accessories

Compressport Freebelt Pro

The Compressport Freebelt Pro strikes an excellent balance between practicality, comfort, and minimal design. I use it whenever I need to carry essentials: nutrition, a phone, keys, water, or extra layers. Its snug fit keeps items secure with minimal bounce, especially since the load sits close to your centre of mass, which interferes less with running form than a traditional vest.

That said, the belt has its limits. For anything more than a few gels, a 500ml bottle, and a phone, I would switch to a running vest for better volume and weight distribution. Once overpacked, the belt can become unstable and distracting.

COROS Pace Pro

The COROS Pace Pro is everything most runners need in a lightweight, user-friendly package. I’ve always been a fan of the standard COROS Pace series for their strong feature set and competitive pricing, but the Pace Pro takes it further with mapping capabilities that allow you to follow pre-planned routes.

For me, this is a game-changer when exploring new areas. It gives me the confidence to leave my phone at home, knowing I won’t get lost and can focus fully on the run.

Conclusion

The winter months often feel gloomy, but they also offer a rare chance to run in conditions that bring variety, challenge, and even excitement to an otherwise repetitive sport. With the proper equipment, winter running becomes not only manageable but deeply enjoyable. If you’re interested in trying out any of the kit featured here, you can find it all at Top4Running.com.
