A shoe which suits its role and loves to pick up the pace

It might not be the most comfortable upper going as it is racer focussed rather than plush

The midsole may be a little firmer than some people's tastes may enjoy

SPECS

The ASICS Sonicblast 2 is a lightweight uptempo shoe built for faster sessions. My first impression was mixed, mainly because the midsole felt much firmer than I usually prefer. However, after a few runs, I started to understand the shoe better and appreciate what it does well. It still is not one of my favourites, but it has a clear purpose. The Sonicblast 2 feels best when you pick up the pace, making it a much better option for tempo sessions than easy runs.

Upper and Fit of the ASICS Sonicblast 2

What works for me

The fit of the ASICS Sonicblast 2 works well for me. Putting my foot into the shoe feels easy while the overall fit feels right. The upper uses a very thin engineered mesh which also makes it quite breathable. That thin construction probably contributes to the shoe’s low weight.

At 245g, the Sonicblast 2 feels light underfoot as well as on the scales. I also had no rubbing issues during my runs. The laces are another detail I like. ASICS uses textured laces, which work well and feel secure. Overall, the upper does what I need without adding unnecessary weight.

What doesn’t work for me

The upper is not the most comfortable one I have used. Nothing caused any major issues during my runs. However, I was just left with a feeling of discomfort overall. The Sonicblast 2 clearly focuses more on performance than a plush feeling.

Midsole and Ride of the ASICS Sonicblast 2

What works for me

The Sonicblast 2 starts to make much more sense once you increase the pace. ASICS uses a dual-density midsole with two different foams. FF TURBO SQUARED sits on top, while FF BLAST MAX forms the lower layer. The shoe also features a redesigned forked ASTROPLATE and a new trampoline pod in the forefoot.

ASICS designed this combination to improve propulsion and create a smoother, faster ride. You can really feel that speed-focused construction when you start running faster. The shoe constantly encouraged me to pick up the pace during my runs. I even tried using it for easy sessions, but I found it difficult to stay easy. That makes the Sonicblast 2 a much better option for tempo runs.

I would also use it for track sessions and other faster workouts. For me, its main strength is how naturally it pushes you towards a quicker pace.

What doesn’t work for me

My biggest issue with the Sonicblast 2 is the firmness of the midsole. When I first put the shoes on, I immediately thought I would dislike them because the foam felt much too firm. I usually enjoy shoes with a softer feeling underfoot. After several runs, my opinion became more positive. I would now call it a good shoe, but it still is not one of my favourites. The midsole remains too firm for what I personally enjoy.

Outsole of the ASICS Sonicblast 2

Grip and Traction

I do not have much to say about the outsole, and that is not necessarily a negative. I experienced no slipping during my runs mostly because the weather is pretty nice in Brussels at the moment, and the outsole simply did its job. I did run on different surfaces like roads but also some paths in parks and I didn’t notice anything particularly impressive about the grip, but I also had no problems with it.

Durability

The outsole looks durable so far. I have not experienced any issues during my testing, and I cannot point to any noticeable durability concerns at this stage. For now, it does exactly what I expect from it.

Conclusion

Value for Money

The ASICS Sonicblast 2 costs €190, and for me, that price fits the type of shoe quite well. It can handle several types of faster sessions, and you could also use it for racing. It makes particular sense for runners who do not want to race in a carbon-plated shoe. I actually considered using the Sonicblast 2 for my next race, which says quite a lot about where I see the shoe in my rotation. Overall, the €190 feels reasonable for what’s on offer.

Fitting it into a shoe rotation

For me, the Sonicblast 2 has a very clear role. It is an uptempo shoe for speed work. This is the shoe I would choose when I know the session will include faster paces. I would use it for tempo runs, track sessions and other faster workouts. I would not use it as my only running shoe. Sonicblast 2 needs at least a daily trainer alongside it. A daily trainer can cover easy mileage and slower runs, while the Sonicblast 2 can take over when you want to increase the pace.

Final Verdict

The ASICS Sonicblast 2 is difficult for me to describe as either great or bad. It sits somewhere in the middle and does what ASICS designed it to do. The shoe feels light and encourages faster running. It works particularly well when you want to pick up the pace. However, the firm midsole does not match my personal preferences. I usually prefer a much softer feeling underfoot, which stops the Sonicblast 2 from becoming one of my go to shoes. Still, I enjoyed it more after several runs than I expected initially. For runners who enjoy a firmer ride, it could be a great option. For me, it remains a good and reliable uptempo option.

Comparisons Against Similar Shoes

ASICS Sonicblast 2 vs Brooks Hyperion Max 4

These are the two uptempo shoes I use the most at the moment. The biggest difference comes from the midsole feel. The Hyperion Max 4 feels softer underfoot, while the Sonicblast 2 provides a noticeably firmer ride. That difference should help runners decide between them. If you prefer a softer feeling, I would lean towards the Hyperion Max 4. If you prefer firmer shoes, the Sonicblast 2 makes more sense. Both work well for faster training, but their different midsole feelings create very different experiences.

ASICS Sonicblast 2 vs ASICS Novablast 6

The difference between these two shoes mainly comes down to their intended use. The ASICS Novablast 6 can handle both daily mileage and speed work, so you can use it across a much wider range of sessions. However, you have to create the speed yourself. The Sonicblast 2 feels much more focused on helping you run faster, and that is its main advantage. It has been designed specifically for faster sessions, and the shoe naturally encourages me to increase the pace. With the Novablast 6, I need to put more effort into creating that same feeling. The Novablast 6 offers more versatility, while the Sonicblast 2 offers a more specific experience for speed work.
