Over the past few years, ASICS have been making strides at the front of the pack. Their racing shoes have come a long way with the recent releases of the MetaSpeed Tokyo series. FFLeap has made an already good shoe even faster, lighter and bouncier. However, one of ASICS biggest hits has been the Superblast. The behemoth of a shoe which took the streets by storm has reached its second iteration and sells out as soon as it hits the shelves. To build on this success, ASICS bring us two new shoes. We get the Megablast and Sonicblast. One plated, one not. Both feature FFTurbo Squared which is stylised as FFTurbo2. Bouncier, softer and better?
Let’s see!
Upper and Fit of the ASICS Megablast
What works for me
What works for me in the upper of the ASICS Megablast is, first of all, the material. I think the material is pretty nice. It’s an engineered woven mesh. The length of the shoe is good — it’s a true-to-size fit. The width is not substantial. In fact, I think it could be maybe a bit wider. I had a touch of little toe shuffling and rubbing in the forefoot of the shoe, but nothing dramatic.
In general, the shoe held really well on my feet. The heel was very comfortable, the tongue as well. ASICS used some of the textured laces that I think are really, really good. Overall, this is a good upper.
What doesn’t work for me
What doesn’t work for me, like I said, is the width in the forefoot. It’s not dramatic, but I think this could be an area of improvement. I had a bit of pinkie rubbing and I don’t necessarily have the widest feet.
Midsole and Ride of the ASCIS Megablast
What works for me
The midsole of the ASICS Megablast is made of a full-length FF Turbo2 midsole compound. This is a new foam that is 33% bouncier, 10% softer, and 3% lighter compared to FF Turbo. It is just phenomenal!
The ride of the Megablast is softer than the Superblast, but I think it can pretty much handle the same paces — maybe with a bit more fatigue after reasonable distance. In general, this is such a cool ride. The heel is really cushioned. Meanwhile, the bounce is phenomenal, very, very strong. In my mind, it reminds me almost of the Nike Invincible v1 type of bounce.
From the first steps, it is a shoe that really hits it out of the park. I had so much fun running in it. I even wonder if this isn’t one of my favorite, if not THE favorite, rides of 2025 so far.
Also, I must add that I did some hill reps in this shoe, picking up the pace down to almost sprinting pace at 2:20 min/km uphill in very short 10-second bursts. It did well, but you can definitely feel that the sweet spot for this shoe will be anything between half-marathon pace and easy runs. Easy paces were so fun in the shoe. Yet, when picking up the pace, it had the liveliness, the zestiness, all the fun of the new foam, while being stable and not requiring extra attention. That’s a very good thing.
Conclusion
Initial Verdict
For now, I do not have a lot of mileage on this shoe. I will need to update this article along with some of my Meta Endurance colleagues. But in general, I would say that this is a shoe you need to try, and probably, again, one of the greatest shoes from ASICS I have tried so far.
Just like they did with the Superblast, they are knocking it out of the park again with the Megablast. The Megablast releases as part of the Tokyo Collection before the Tokyo World Championships in 2025. It also launches alongside the Sonicblast, a new edition you can find a quick preview of if you click right here.
